At its annual awards convention in January, the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) awarded top photographic honors to Worth Canoy of VPS Motor Images. Canoy's first-place winner in the category of Race Action Photography featured Rusty Wallace's crew executing a pit stop during the 2005 Dodge Charger 500 at Darlington Raceway. It was originally published in Speedway Illustrated.
"One of the things I like most about this shot is the contrast in the end of Rusty's career - 'Rusty's Last Call' - and the place where superspeedway racing was born," Canoy said. "Also, no matter how many times I see these pit stops, they never cease to amaze me. I always try to capture the motion involved in a pit stop, seeing these crews do in 15 seconds what takes two hours to accomplish at my garage! I'm really honored that the NMPA chose to recognize this shot."
Race action under the lights returns to Darlington Raceway on Mother's Day weekend 2006. The Dodge Charger 500 weekend will include practice and qualifying for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series on Friday, May 12, followed by the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Busch Series race under the lights that evening. Matt Kenseth won the event in 2005.
On Saturday, May 13, Darlington will host Cup Series racing for the 57th consecutive year. The 2006 Dodge Charger 500 will be run under the lights in its entirety. Greg Biffle is the defending champion.
