Wanted: Big Hearts, and a Little Bit of Blood
No sweat; no tears. All we ask in return is a big heart ¿ and a little bit of blood.
On Monday, September 11, the NASCAR Foundation Blood and Marrow Drive will be launched at racetracks nationwide. The program is sponsored by the NASCAR Foundation, the Hendrick Marrow Program and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. Darlington Raceway is one of the participating facilities.
"My work with the American Red Cross has shown me the importance of blood donations. The NASCAR Foundation Blood and Marrow Drive is a great way to build awareness within the NASCAR family, and I encourage fans everywhere to get involved and participate," said two-time Darlington champion Jimmie Johnson.
In addition to giving blood, fans are also encouraged to join the National Marrow Donor Program Registry of volunteers. Every day, thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases which could be treated with a marrow transplant are searching the Registry for a donor.
"I have learned through my personal experience how important the National Marrow Donor Program Registry is to patients in search of hope," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. (Hendrick was diagnosed with leukemia in 1996.) "Joining the Registry is a quick, pain-free process that could save someone's life. The NASCAR Foundation Blood and Marrow Drive is a wonderful way to help those in need, and have a little fun at the same time."
The NASCAR Foundation Blood and Marrow Drive will take place in Darlington Raceway's Infield Care Center on Monday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. To register in advance and schedule your pace car ride, visit www.nascar.com/foundation.
