Darlington Raceway and VAULT™ Present a Pre-Race Concert with Billy Currington
DARLINGTON, S.C. (April 1, 2009) – Fans attending the 2009 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway are in for an extra special treat this year.
As part of the celebration of 60 Years of Racing at Darlington Raceway VAULT™ will be hosting an exclusive pre-race concert by Mercury Nashville Recording artist Billy Currington on the frontstretch during the 2009 Southern 500 pre-race show.
In addition to a pre-race concert, Currington will also perform the National Anthem prior to the Southern 500.
“’I’ve always been a big NASCAR fan so being able to perform at one of the greatest tracks on the circuit is going to be really great,” said Currington. “I remember watching the Southern 500 growing up as a kid. Being able to be a part of that this year in 2009 is something I will remember for the rest of my life.”
“We are very excited to have Billy Currington at Darlington for the Southern 500,” said Darlington Raceway President, Chris Browning. “His pre-race concert will certainly add to the pageantry of the Southern 500 and I know it is something our fans will all enjoy.”
Currington was raised in Rincon, Ga., about 30 minutes north of Savannah, Ga. He was introduced to country music at an early age and developed a strong passion for wanting to be a singer in high school. “I really loved Alabama,” Billy says, “I remember taking a radio in the bathroom and singing like I was Randy Owen.” Right out of high school Billy started working on his country music career by performing at local bars in the Georgia area.
While pursuing his career in music, Billy worked for a concrete company and had a part-time job as a personal trainer. He started writing demos during this time and his songwriting caught the attention of producer Carson Chamberlain.
The two collaborated and began penning songs together. A handful of Currington-Chamberlain demos landed on the desk of Universal Music Group Nashville’s (UMGN) Chairman Luke Lewis and Billy Currington’s dream of landing a record deal finally came true and he was signed on as an artist with Mercury Nashville in 2001.
Billy was well on his way to becoming a country music sensation with his 2003 self-titled debut album that included the Top Ten singles “I Got a Feelin” and “Walk a Little Straighter”. In 2004 he partnered up with legendary country music singer Shania Twain and together they created the smash hit “Party for Two.”
His latest album, Little Bit of Everything, showcases Billy’s musical talent and includes influences from other genres of music such as R&B, pop and rock ’n’ roll. Just like the title of the album states, it includes a little bit of everything. Billy produces all eleven tracks with longtime teammate Chamberlain. “Carson and I have been together since the beginning. We’re just a great team, and we work well together. He’s given me the opportunity to grow as a singer, songwriter and producer.” Since the album’s debut in the Fall of 2008, the first single, “Don’t” has gone #1 and the second single “People Are Crazy” is racing up the charts.
From upbeat attitudes to sultry love longs, Billy has hit every emotion of a country music listener. His easy-going, everyman appeal has attracted numerous fans and his career is on a continuous incline. It is evident that Billy is at a great place in his career not only as a performer, but also as a songwriter and producer.Darlington Raceway or the track “Too Tough to Tame” as it is known to many, is where the purest of NASCAR competition meets true southern hospitality.
