Pearson, Yarborough, Rutherford Highlight Second Annual Darlington Historic Racing Festival Presented By O’Reilly Auto Parts
DARLINGTON, S.C. (Sept. 27, 2009) – Hundreds of vintage race cars once again ascended on Darlington Raceway for the second annual Darlington Historic Racing Festival presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts.
The two-day event took place over the weekend at the track “Too Tough to Tame” and featured over 135 historic cars from 22 different states as well as Canada.
In addition to historic race cars, many racing legends were also featured at the event including South Carolina natives Cale Yarborough and David Pearson, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Marvin Panch and open-wheel legend Johnny Rutherford. Each legend participated in a question and answer session with fans as well as an autograph session.
The star-studded driver lineup was a true tribute to racing’s most prestigious events with nine Southern 500, seven Daytona 500 and three Indianapolis 500 victories represented between the drivers.
“The Darlington Historic Racing Festival presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts is an event for the diehard race fan,” said Darlington Raceway President, Chris Browning. “This event gives our fans the opportunity to get up close to some of the cars and drivers that helped shape motorsports into what it is today.”
The festival featured several car classes – stock cars, Indy roadsters, midgets and modifieds – and included display only cars as well as cars that turned laps on the famed 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval. Three of the most notable Indy roadster display cars were on loan from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum in Speedway, Indiana. The three roadsters actually raced at Darlington Raceway in the 1950s with one of the cars, a 1950 Russo-Nichels Special, taking the checkered flag at Darlington in 1950.
Darlington Raceway or the track “Too Tough to Tame” as it is known to many, is where the purest of NASCAR competition meets true southern hospitality. A NASCAR staple since 1950, Darlington Raceway has seen some of motorsports most talented drivers thunder to Victory Lane. In 2009, a NASCAR tradition, the Southern 500®, returned to Darlington Raceway as part of the famed track’s celebration of 60 Seasons of Racing.
For fans who wish to purchase tickets to the events at Darlington Raceway in 2010 seat request orders are being taken to secure your spot in the grandstand of your choice.
