Fan Phones in from Afghanistan to Place Darlington Ticket Order
DARLINGTON, S.C. (April 16, 2010) – The 2010 installment of the SHOWTIME Southern 500 is right around the corner and fans are clamoring to get their tickets for the famed event that has hosted sellout crowds four of the last five years.
With phones ringing nearly constantly in the Darlington ticket office receiving a call from an unknown area code is not unusual, except earlier this week when the person calling was Michael Burgess, a Department of Defense worker stationed in Afghanistan.
Burgess, native of Pacolet, SC, is a retired veteran who served 33 years in various capacities in the Air Force. Now in Afghanistan, he is working for the Department of Defense on his third tour of duty and is scheduled to return home just prior to the 2010 SHOWTIME Southern 500 on May 8.
“Darlington is my home track and I try to get to the race every year,” said Burgess. “The racing at Darlington is great and the atmosphere there during a race can’t be beat. I’m really looking forward to getting home and attending this year’s race.”
Burgess first began attending races at Darlington in the 1970s and tries to never miss a race. This year he will have one of the best seats in the house when he takes his seat alongside his wife and brother-in-law in the Tyler Tower.
“Michael Burgess is the perfect example of just how passionate Darlington Raceway fans are,” said track President Chris Browning. “We appreciate Michael’s service to our country for so many years and his dedication to his home track, Darlington Raceway.”
