Darlington Raceway Blood Drive Returns September 8
All presenting donors will receive a free pace car ride around the track Too Tough To Tame and a goodie bag including a free Red Cross t-shirt. Fatz Café of Florence will be providing free food to donors and the South Carolina National Guard will be on site with a rock climbing wall. Local MRN radio affiliate, Eagle 92.9 FM, will be broadcasting live throughout the day.
The drive will also pay tribute to those lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Donors will be invited to sign a “We Remember” banner that will be displayed at Darlington Raceway.
“We are honored to again partner with the American Red Cross for this important community event,” said Darlington Raceway President, Chris Browning. “This drive is the largest one-day collection event in the Pee Dee region and we hope to continue to grow the event in 2011.”
The American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to 54 hospitals and must have 500 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.
Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given safely every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older, 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
Darlington Raceway, or the track Too Tough To Tame as it is known to many, is where the purest of NASCAR competition meets true southern hospitality. A NASCAR staple since 1950, Darlington Raceway has seen some of motorsports most talented drivers thunder to Gatorade Victory Lane.
