Denny Hamlin To Potentially Return To Racing At Darlington Raceway
DARLINGTON, S.C. (March 27, 2013) – With the recent news that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin will be out of action the next six weeks due to injury, a quick look at the calendar shows his potential return to the series could take place at Darlington Raceway, during the Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend on May 10-11.
With an off weekend approaching for the Easter holiday, and five continuous weekends of racing to follow, Darlington may fall at just the right time for the driver of the No. 11 Sport Clips Toyota to return to the track.
Hamlin has never shied away from the fact that he loves racing at Darlington. He has one Sprint Cup Series victory (2010), three top-five and six top-10 finishes in seven career starts. He has also led a total of 354 laps at the track Too Tough to Tame, with an average finish of 5.9.
His Nationwide Series stats are just as strong. The Virginia native has posted three wins, three poles, five top-five and top-10 finishes, in each of his seven career starts in that series, respectively.
“We’ve really had a lot of success at Darlington and it’s a track I enjoy racing at every year,” Hamlin said during a media appearance for the track in April 2012. “It’s a tough track to drive, but that’s why so many drivers love it. It’s a challenge for us.”
Darlington could also be a place where the feud between Hamlin and Joey Logano has the potential to continue as the Lady in Black has been known to make blood pressures rise following 500 miles of hard, door-to-door racing every Mother’s Day weekend.
It’s been evident especially the past two years when post-race altercations involving Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick broke out on pit road in 2011, and Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman’s pit crews scuffling following last year’s Bojangles’ Southern 500.
If Hamlin does return to the track at Darlington and the Logano feud continues, the Lady in Black could be the stage where more fireworks fly, between the former teammates.
“Darlington is well known for starting or continuing some pretty heated rivalries in our sport over the years,” Darlington president Chris Browning said. “If Hamlin returns on our race weekend and things have not settled down between him and Joey Logano, it could be a recipe for some intense racing between the two.”
