2015 Blood Drive

DARLINGTON, SOUTH CAROLINA (May 11, 2015) – A new tradition begins at Darlington Raceway as its annual Blood Drive event, now in its 10th year, moves to a new date, Wednesday, May 20, 2015.

The Darlington Raceway Blood Drive has experienced tremendous success over the years. It’s important to remember that one unit of blood can be transfused up to three people. In all, 2014 blood drive events at the track collected 416 units, thus potentially saving the lives of 1,248 South Carolinians.

“This is a community event we’ve hosted for 10 years, which benefits the South Carolina Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross,” Darlington Raceway President Chip Wile said. “With our Bojangles’ Southern 500 moving to its traditional Labor Day weekend date, we wanted to find a new home for our annual Blood Drive. It’s an important initiative for our track and the American Red Cross is a tremendous community partner.”

For each donation, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at the Lady in Black, which includes an opportunity to take a pace car ride around the Darlington oval. All donors will also receive a free admission to the track’s newly refurbished museum, which can be redeemed up to a week after the blood drive. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The blood drive, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on May 20, is now accepting appointments. To reserve your donation time, go to www.redcrossblood.org, click on the Make an Appointment link and enter the sponsor code: darlingtonraceway or call 1-800-REDCROSS. Appointments are encouraged in advance.

The 2014 events collected enough units of blood to service the Palmetto State for almost one day of need. The Red Cross needs about 500 donations per day to keep up with demand from area hospitals.

Since 2005, Darlington Raceway has collected 2,084 units of blood for the South Carolina Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross, potentially saving the lives of 6,252 people in our community.

The American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to approximately 50 hospitals and must have 500 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Platelets can be given safely every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older, 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.

The Tradition Returns to Labor Day weekend as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500® is set for Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015. The NASCAR XFINITY Series VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 will race on Saturday, Sept. 5. Tickets are on sale now by calling 866-459-7223 or visiting www.DarlingtonRaceway.com
