Darlington, SC
Founded in 1785, Darlington prides itself on it's rich cultural history and world famous Darlington Raceway. With a population of just under 70,000, Darlington County includes Darlington, Hartsville, Lamar and Society Hill.
Some of Darlington's most famous natives include:
William G. "Billy" Farrow - U.S. Lieutenant who served in World War II as one of General Jimmy Doolittle's Raiders. Farrow was buried, with honors, in Arlington National Cemetery and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart, posthumously.
James Elliott Williams - The most decorated person ever enlisted in the U.S. Navy, Williams is also the recipient of the Medal of Honor. Williams' other awards include the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star as well as several others. A section of Highway 52 in Darlington is named in his honor.
Harry Byrd - Started playing major league baseball in 1950. Throughout his career, he played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. His career started in 1950 and lasted 7 years.
Orlando Hudson - Professional baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers (Feb. 1, 2009-present). Orlando has also played for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is a multiple winner of the American League Gold Glove award.
