Oh Say, Can You Sing?
If you have always dreamed of having the opportunity to sing the national anthem at Darlington Raceway, your chance may have arrived. The track "Too Tough To Tame" is hosting a national anthem singing contest during the month of March. The winner will perform the anthem prior to the start of the “Silver Crown Showdown at Darlington” USAC race, scheduled to be held at Darlington Raceway on Thursday evening, May 10.
Aspiring singers can submit their performances by emailing an mp3 file to Darlington Raceway, or by mailing a CD or cassette recording. Email submissions may be sent to celliott@darlingtonraceway.com; CDs and cassettes should be mailed to Darlington Raceway, Attn: Cathy Elliott, PO Box 500, Darlington, SC 29540.
All entries must include complete contact information. Finalists must be able to travel to Darlington, South Carolina on Wednesday, April 11, 2007. There is no age limit for entry, but in the event that a minor child (under the age of 18) wins the competition, he or she must be accompanied at all times by a parent or legal guardian.
After reviewing the submitted anthems, track officials will narrow the field to three finalists, who will be invited to Darlington for the Dodge Avenger 500 Media Day in April. All three finalists will perform the national anthem at Media Day, and visiting driver Kasey Kahne will select the winner. All decisions of Kasey Kahne and/or Darlington Raceway will be final and not subject to appeal.
All three finalists will receive tickets to the “Silver Crown Showdown at Darlington” race on Thursday, May 10 and the Diamond Hill Plywood NASCAR Busch Series race, scheduled to be held at Darlington Raceway on Friday, May 11, 2007. The grand prize winner, in addition to performing the anthem on May 10, will also receive tickets and pre-race pit passes for the Dodge Avenger 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race, scheduled to be held on Saturday evening, May 12. Pit access is subject to the rules and regulations of Darlington Raceway of South Carolina, LLC and any applicable sanctioning body including without limitation the execution of releases and/or waivers of liability.
The 2007 Dodge Avenger 500 weekend at Darlington Raceway will include practice for the USAC Silver Crown Series and the NASCAR Busch Series on Thursday, May 10, followed by USAC qualifying and the “Silver Crown Showdown at Darlington” under the lights.
On Friday, May 11, the day will include NASCAR NEXTEL Cup practice, and NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series qualifying, followed by the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Busch Series race under the lights that evening. Denny Hamlin is the defending champion.
On Saturday, May 12, Darlington will host Cup Series racing for the 58th consecutive season as Greg Biffle attempts to join the short list of drivers to win three events in a row at NASCAR's most historic venue. The 2007 Dodge Avenger 500 will be run under the lights in its entirety.
